What is the 180-degree rule?

What is the 180-degree rule?

The 180-degree rule means that two characters in the same scene should have the same left/right. If the rule is not followed it would break up the setting and would show poor editing. If you are filming from one side, then switch to the other side the characters would have appeared to switch place, this can be confusing for the audience.

The photo above shows how the 180-degree rule works.
